1944 Fisk's Mississippi Meander Maps
This incredible map is from a set drafted in 1944, by Harold N. Fisk a geology professor from Oregon. It charts the meandering course of the Mississippi river over the centuries, and was compiled after exhaustive geological work in the field.
Each track is date-coded by colour: bright green shows its 1880 course, brick red 1820, pale blue 1765, then various striped, spotted and shaded tones which, together, turn the maps into an animated cartoon, layered into a single frame showing how the river has wriggled eastwards over the centuries.
