At the lodge, we're not purists. When you're in the bush or at the bar, a flame is a flame. It doesn't matter if comes from a flint, a match, or a blow torch. What does matters is that it's there when you need it, whether you've just swum to shore after dumping your canoe in an autumn storm, or the femme fatale next to you needs a light. Every one of us carries a lighter in our pocket or pack when we are in town or in the bush. And our preferred lighter is this official Zippo replica of the their 1941 model.
The Zippo company was formed in 1932. The patent for what we call the "Zippo lighter" was issued four years later. When World War II broke out, their lighter became popular item among American soldiers, because it was reliable, it looked good, and it had that satisfying Zippo "click". The 1941 model, which drove its sudden world wide popularity, was a masterpiece in understatement: clean lines, with rounded edges, and soft curves. While thousands of different Zippo models came afterwards, none improved on the simple and beautiful 1941 design.
