The Fire Lay

The Fire Lay

The Fire Lay

There's more to building a campfire than just getting it going (as tough and complicated as that can be on occasion). You also need to think about "the lay". Simply put, this is how you arrange the firewood as it burns. If you want more reflected heat, you may want the campfire or reflector lay. If you're boiling water, the pioneer lay is useful. If you need some hot coals for a frying pan, then try the Belmore Lay.

This illustration from the classic bushcraft book, Wildwood Wisdom, is a nice summary.
